This well balanced chemical composition endows 8620 round steel with excellent properties. Nickel imparts good toughness and ductility, while chromium and molybdenum contribute to increased hardness penetration and wear resistance.

Mechanical Properties

  • Tensile Strength: After quenching and tempering, the tensile strength of 8620 round steel typically ranges from 880 to 1080 MPa. For larger diameters, the lower end of this range is more common, while smaller diameters may approach the higher end.
  • Yield Strength: The yield strength usually lies between 785 to 930 MPa. These values ensure the material can withstand significant mechanical loads without permanent deformation.
  • Elongation: It exhibits an elongation rate of 10 to 12%, indicating its ability to deform plastically before fracture, which is crucial for applications requiring flexibility.
  • Hardness: When carburized and quenched, the surface hardness can reach HRC 58 – 63, providing exceptional wear resistance for surface – intensive applications.

8620 heat treatment performance

8620 round steel is readily carburized. The well-balanced alloy content permits hardening to produce a strong, tough core and high case hardness.
Carburizing
The recommended carburizing temperature is generally in the range of 900 – 930°C. The carburizing time depends on the required case depth. For example, to achieve a case depth of 0.5 – 0.8 mm, the carburizing time is approximately 3 – 4 hours; for a case depth of 0.8 – 1.2 mm, it is around 4 – 6 hours.
Quenching
The quenching temperature is around 810 to 840°C. After carburizing, the steel is rapidly cooled in oil to obtain a high – hardness surface layer.
Tempering
After carburizing and quenching, tempering at 150 to 200°C for 1 to 2 hours is carried out. This process reduces internal stress, improves toughness, and achieves an optimal combination of strength, toughness, and wear resistance.
